EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)

The Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1971 gives effect in the United Kingdom to the International Convention for the Unification of certain Rules of Law relating to Bills of Lading, signed at Brussels on 25th August 1924 (Cmnd. 3806), as amended by the Protocol of 23rd February 1968 (Cmnd. 6944) (commonly known as "the Hague-Visby Rules").

The Carriage of Goods by Sea (Parties to Convention) Order 1985 certifies the contracting States to the 1924 Convention as amended by the 1968 Protocol and the territories in respect of which they are contracting States.

This Order amends that 1985 Order by adding three further States (Croatia, Georgia and Italy) which, since that Order was made, have become contracting States.
