The Number of Members of Thames Valley Police Authority Order 1997

In exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 4(2) of the Police Act 1996[1], the Secretary of State hereby makes the following Order:

    1.This Order may be cited as the Number of Members of Thames Valley Police Authority Order 1997.

    2. - (1) Subject to paragraph (2) below, this Order shall come into force on 1st April 1998.

    (2) For the purposes of - 

    (a) the functions to which the Thames Valley (Police Authority) Order 1997[2] applies, and

    (b) the requirement to comply with procedures set out in Schedule 3 to the Police Act 1996 (police authorities: selection of independent members) in respect of the additional member to be appointed under paragraph 5 of Schedule 2 to that Act as a result of the increase in numbers made by this Order,

this Order shall come into force on 1st October 1997.

    3.The number of members of the Thames Valley Police Authority shall be nineteen, of which six members shall be persons appointed under paragraph 5 of Schedule 2 to the Police Act 1996 (and, accordingly, by virtue of paragraph 1(2)(a) and (c) of that Schedule, ten members shall be members of relevant councils appointed under paragraph 2 of it and the remainder shall be magistrates appointed under paragraph 8 of it).

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)


This Order increases the number of members of the Thames Valley police authority from seventeen (under section 4(1) of the Police Act 1996) to nineteen. Subject to the transitional provision in article 2(2), the increase takes effect on 1st April 1998.
