In exercise of the powers conferred upon her by section 7(5) of the Northern Ireland Arms Decommissioning Act 1997[1], and after consulting the Minister for Justice of the Republic of Ireland[2], the Secretary of State hereby makes the following Order: 1.This Order may be cited as the Northern Ireland Arms Decommissioning Act 1997 (Commencement of Section 7) Order 1997. 2.Section 7 of the Northern Ireland Arms Decommissioning Act 1997 (independent organisation established by agreement with the Government of the Republic of Ireland to facilitate the decommissioning of firearms, ammunition and explosives) shall come into force on 1st September 1997. Marjorie Mowlam One of Her Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State Northern Ireland Office 29th August 1997 (This note is not part of the Order) This Order brings section 7 of the Northern Ireland Arms Decommissioning Act 1997 into force on 1st September 1997. Section 7 gives the Secretary of State power by order to confer certain powers, immunities and privileges on an independent Commission, its members and others, established by agreement, in connection with the affairs of Northern Ireland, between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland to facilitate the decommissioning of firearms, ammunition and explosives. Such an agreement was concluded on 26th August 1997.
