The Zoonoses Order 1988

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Secretary of State for Wales, acting jointly, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 1, 7(1), 8(1), 15(4), 29(1) and (2), 72, 86(1) and 88(2) of the Animal Health Act 1981[1] and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following Order: Title and commencement 1. This Order may be cited as the Zoonoses Order 1988 and shall come into force on 22nd December 1988. Interpretation 2. In this Order
"the Act" means the Animal Health Act 1981;
"animals" means bovine animals, sheep, goats, deer and all other ruminating animals;
"the Ministers" means the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Secretary of State for Wales, acting jointly. Designation of bovine spongiform encephalopathy for the purposes of section 29 3.(1) Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, being a disease of animals which, in the opinion of the Ministers, constitutes a risk within the meaning of section 29 of the Act, is hereby designated for the purposes of that section.
(2) The provisions of the Act listed in the Schedule to this Order shall apply in relation to bovine spongiform encephalopathy with a view to reducing the risk to human health from that disease.684
Amendment of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy Order 1988 4. In article 2 of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy Order 1988[2] the words "in its application to this Order" shall be omitted. In Witness whereof the Official Seal of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is hereunto affixed on 21st December 1988.
