MERCHANT SHIPPING
The Merchant Shipping (Ships' Names) (Amendment) Regulations 1988

The Secretary of State for Transport, in conjunction with the Commissioners of Customs & Excise, in exercise of powers conferred by section 50 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1906[1] and now vested in him[2] and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Ships' Names) (Amendment) Regulations 1988 and shall come into force on 1st December 1988.
2. The Merchant Shipping (Ships' Names) Regulations 1979[3] shall be amended as follows:
(1) After regulation 2 a new regulation 2A shall be inserted as follows: "2A. In these Regulations "registry" and "registered" mean respectively registry under, and registered under Part I of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894[4].";
(2) The proviso to regulation 3 shall be deleted.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Regulations)The Merchant Shipping Act 1988 (c. 12) excluded fishing vessels from registry under Part I of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894 and set up a separate register for fishing vessels under Part II of the 1988 Act.
Following those provisions, these Regulations amend the Merchant Shipping (Ships' Names) Regulations 1979 by confining their application to ships registered under Part I.
