EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
These Regulations amend the Merchant Shipping (Maintenance of Seamen's Dependants) Regulations 1972 by substituting for the reference to the Ministry of Social Security Act 1966 a reference to the Social Security Act 1986. The 1972 Regulations enable certain "responsible authorities" to serve notice on employers to retain out of seamen's wages expenses those authorities have incurred in respect of his dependants. Those expenses include payment of certain Social Security benefits.
