The Road Vehicles (Marking of Special Weights) (Amendment) Regulations 1987

    The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 172 of the Road Traffic Act 1972[1], and now vested in him[2], and of all other enabling powers, and after consultation with representative organisations in accordance with the provisions of section 199(2) of that Act, hereby makes the following Regulations:
        1.    These Regulations may be cited as the Road Vehicles (Marking of Special Weights) (Amendment) Regulations 1987 and shall come into force on 1st January 1988.
        2.    The Road Vehicles (Marking of Special Weights) Regulations 1983[3] are hereby amended in accordance with the following provisions of these Regulations.
        3.    In regulation 2(2) there shall be added after the word "position":
      " and all letters and figures shown on the plate shall be not less than 4 millimetres in height.".

        4.    In regulation 3(1) for "12 miles per hour" there shall be substituted:
      "each of the following—
        (i) 12 miles per hour;
        (ii) 20 miles per hour;
        (iii) 25 miles per hour;
        (iv) 30 miles per hour;
        (v) 35 miles per hour;
        (vi) 40 miles per hour,".

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
    These Regulations amend the Road Vehicles (Marking of Special Weights) Regulations 1983 ("the principal Regulations") as follows:
      (a) the minimum height of letters and figures on a plate authorised by the principal Regulations is prescribed; and
      (b) six speeds replace the single speed specified in the principal Regulations.
